Quick Stop: The Blue Pools

Refreshingly cold glacial-fed river

Do not adjust your computer monitor, the water pictured is shown in true color! The Blue Pools are located along Haast Pass heading toward Lake Wanaka and Queenstown, and they are a brilliant sight!

Now for a little science:

If you’re wondering how the Blue Pools maintain their vibrant color, you can thank finely ground glacial sediment. When this sediment is carried away from the glacier by draining meltwater, the fine particles remain suspended in resulting steams or pools and refracts blue colors found in the light spectrum.
